The exact temporal relationship between spontaneous nocturnal erections and rapid eye movement (REM) sleep was studied in healthy men with the aim of creating a basis for a more sophisticated analysis of nocturnal erection measurements in physiological research and clinical applications. The vast majority of erectile events was coupled to REM episodes, where the latency between the beginning of erections and REM episodes showed a large variability. Moreover, a correlation analysis revealed a highly significant decrease of the latency over the course of the night. The relation between plasma lipids and coronary heart disease (CHD) in the elderly is still debated, as well as the proposed role of lipoproteins as markers of longevity. In this study both normolipidemic elderly and middle-aged women with CHD showed higher triglycerides and apolipoprotein B levels and lower high-density lipoprotein (HDL)-cholesterol and apolipoprotein A-I levels in comparison with age-matched subjects without CHD. To investigate the impact of recent climatic changes on plant development, this study used phenological data of the volunteer networks in Latvia and Lithuania from the 1971-2000 period. The phenological calendar method was applied. Phenological seasons were described using data on 6 phenological phases at 10 stations. The growing season was described using birch Betula pendula as an example. Correlation analysis, linear regression and non-parametric Mann-Kendall trend tests were applied to establish the relationship between phenological phases and meteorological factors (temperature, precipitation) and the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO). This paper studies data of ultraviolet (290–385 nm band) horizontal solar irradiation and global horizontal solar irradiation measured at Valencia (Spain) during the period March 1991 to September 1991. Analysis of error estimations and correlation coefficients show that the 10 minute, hourly, and daily values of ultraviolet (UV) and global irradiation are highly correlated. Improved figures and less dependence on location are achieved by defining a clearness index for the UV 290–385 nm band and relating it to the conventional whole-band clearness index. COVARIANCE AND CORRELATION ESTIMATORS IN BIPARTITE SYSTEMS

We present a weighted estimator of the covariance and correlation in bipartite complex systems with a double layer of heterogeneity. The advantage provided by the weighted estimators lies in the fact that the unweighted sample covariance and correlation can be shown to possess a bias. Indeed, such a bias affects real bipartite systems, and, for example, we report its effects on two empirical systems, one social and the other biological. On the contrary, our newly proposed weighted estimators remove the bias and are better suited to describe such systems.
Solvation of a probe molecule by fluid supercooled water in a hydrogel at 200 K

By combining electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) measurements on a nitroxide probe and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), we demonstrate existence of liquid supercooled water in a silica hydrogel with high hydration level down to temperatures of at least 198 K. Besides the major fraction of liquid supercooled water, a minor fraction crystallizes at about 236 K during cooling and melts at 246 K during heating. The liquid domains are of sufficient size to solvate the nearly spherical paramagnetic probe molecule TEMPO with a diameter of about 6 angstrom. Mechanisms of ligand binding by monoclonal anti-coproporphyrin antibodies are studied by steady-state and time-resolved fluorescence spectroscopy by use of a picosecond laser system. The antibodies quench the coproporphyrin (CP) fluorescence, but the CP fluorescence spectra show a strong shift of maxima at high concentrations of antibodies (Ab) or their Fab fragment. This can be explained by a special type of Ab or Fab dimerization. Fluorescence decays of CP are measured at different concentrations of Ab and different pH values.
